Like
most Scottish schools we use the 5-14 National Guidelines as a basis for
the curriculum we offer the children. The guidelines give schools advice
on Programmes of Study, Assessment and Attainment Targets for each level.
There are six levels in the 5-14 Programme.
Level A - Most pupils will move through this level in the course of P1-P3.
Level B - Most pupils will reach this level in P3 or even earlier; most
will by the end of P4.
Level C - Most pupils will achieve this level in the course of P4-P6.
Level D - Some pupils will reach this level in P5-P6 or even earlier;
most will by the end of P7.
Level E - Some pupils will achieve this level in P7/S1; most will by the
end of S2.
Level F - Should be attainable in part by some pupils, and completed by
a few pupils, in the course of P7-S2.
The 5-14 Curriculum consists of six main areas -
Mathematics , Language, Environmental Studies,
Expressive Arts and RME, Health, Personal and Social Development.
The
modern curriculum is very full and broad. Through effective planning we
ensure that the children receive a balance of subjects throughout the
session. The guidelines also give recommendations on the minimum amount
of time to be spent on each curricular area with a 20% flexibility time
to be used at the school's discretion.
Each term classes study a theme or topic which allows curricular areas
to be integrated. Number and language work can be based on the topic for
example rather than using a text book. In this way work becomes more meaningful
and relevant to the children. Curriculum content is also adapted to suit
individual needs.
Through the teaching of our curriculum we seek to develop knowledge, skills,
attitudes and techniques which will enable our children to develop independence
and responsibility in the learning situation. The curriculum will also
provide the base from which children develop intellectually, creatively,
socially, physically and spiritually. |
