What's it for?

The Eco-Council meets at least once a term and is responsible for coordinating the school's work towards Green Flag status from Eco-Schools Scotland.

What else does it do?

It liases with other Eco bodies such as RSPB, SNH as well as lobbying OIC, parents and community members on projects it is involved in.

How do you become a member?

Once a year in August there are elections for the pupil members and anyone can stand to be a member.Community representatives are invited to attend by the current Eco Council.

Let the current Eco Council members introduce themselves:

My Name is Thorfinn Moffat and I'm the Chairman of the Eco-council. I think the two most important jobs for the eco-council are getting rid of litter and saving energy. I like swimming in a pool or in the sea. I take a lot of interest in computers and science.

My name is Alanna Leslie and I'm the Secretary of the Eco-council. I think our school is doing very well with recycling and setting an example to the community.

My hobby is helping on farms.

My name is Ann Groat and I'm a member of the Eco-council and have been a member for less than a year.

I think the eco council is a good thing to be in because it makes other people realise how important it is to save energy and to not litter.

My favourite hobbies are looking after and playing with my cats, reading and playing with my toys and animals. I am also interested in history at school.

My name is Brogen Moffat and I am a member of the Eco council. I think picking up litter asnd saving energy is very important. My hobbies are crsft and art.

My name is Shannon Gibson and I am a member of the Eco council. I have been a member for almost 2 years. We have been doing projects on saving energy and recycling. My hobbies are swimming and diving.

My name is Cameron Leslie I enjoy being a member of the Eco council. I think that recycling is the most important job for the eco council because then we don't have to use so much fossil fuels to make new things. I like to play football with my friends.

My name is Amy Le Mar and I am a member of the Eco Council. I have been a member for about 2 years. I think the Eco council does a lot for the school and works hard on encouraging everyone to save energy. My hobby is swimming but I also enjoy pottery and art.

"As Headteacher of Shapinsay Community School I attend Eco Council meetings in an advisory role and have no voting, proposing or seconding rights. I was Eco Schools coordinator from 2000 until the end of 2008. Both my children attended the school before moving on to KGS. Tapestry, travel and more recently carriage driving with my fell pony 'Blacks' are my ways of relaxing."Clive Horton

My name is Tina Smith and I have worked with children and adults in Orkney schools for over 30 years!! Now based in the Education Department, I am the Link Officer for Shapinsay School. I attend the Eco Council meetings as the department representative. The purpose of this is to be the communication and information link between the school community and the department.
